If an individual is convicted of a felony in Illinois, that criminal offense is typically punishable by a jail sentence of more than one year and a fine of up to $25,000. There are five classifications of felony offense in Illinois:
Class 4 felonies carry a 1-3 year prison sentence. Examples of class 4 offenses include aggravated assault and stalking.
Class 3 felonies carry a 2-5 year prison sentence and can include forgery, failure to register as a sex offender and theft over $300.
Class 2 felonies carry a 3-7 year prison sentence and can include theft over $10,000, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated battery of a police officer.
Class 1 felonies carry a 4-15 year prison sentence and can include theft over $100,000, criminal sexual assault and possession of a controlled substance over 15 grams.
Class X felonies carry a 6-30 year prison sentence and can include armed robbery, home invasion, aggravated battery of a child or senior citizen and theft over $500,000.
